The good news is that many families in Washington DC are still qualifying for bankruptcy even after the 2005 amendments to the bankruptcy code, whose goal was to make it harder for families to qualify for bankruptcy.

Basically, in order to qualify for bankruptcy in Washington DC you must pass a means test.  In order to pass the means test, your income must be less than the average annual income in Washington DC, if it less than that amount then you qualify for bankruptcy and in many cases you will be able to wipe away all of that pesky credit card debt, medical bills, etc that have been keeping you up at night.

The media income for a single person in Washington DC is $42,340.  That means that if your average annual income is less than this amount then you qualify for bankruptcy.  The average income for a 2-person family – 4-person family is: $72,724.  Again, this means that if your family takes home less than this annually, in general, you will pass the means test and are qualified to file for bankruptcy.

If your income is just above this amount, then do not worry, it is likely that you may still qualify for bankruptcy in Washington DC, however, we would need to run a more thorough means test where we would look at your income and expenses in more detail.  This will help us determine whether you qualify for bankruptcy.   In many cases, my clients are above the state median income but still pass under the more thorogh analysis.
